Unchanging God

Notes: Promises of the Unchanging God

Posted by

Promises of the unchanging God are the spring for the believers. It is a great encouragement for the follower of Jesus Christ, for we have a personal relationship with God who never changes even though the world around us is changing at a rapid pace. Our culture is changing and the worldview it carries is changing faster than we can ever imagine. At time, the circumstances of this world can frighten and leave the world hopeless; however, in Christ, we have a message of hope.

The idea that God is unchanging is a central belief in Christianity, as it provides assurance and stability in a world that is constantly changing. The Bible teaches that God is immutable, or incapable of change, in his essence, attributes, plans, promises, judgement, and love.

Unchanging Character of God

In Essence

In terms of his essence, God is described as the “same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). This means that God’s nature, being, and existence remain constant, without any alteration or variation. God is eternal, and therefore not subject to the limitations of time. World changes, kings and kingdoms pass away, heaven and earth will pass away but God never changes and we can rely on His promises.

In Attributes

God’s attributes also remain unchanged. He is always just, holy, loving, and sovereign. These characteristics are not subject to human opinions or circumstances, but are rooted in his nature as God. For instance, in Malachi 3:6, God says “I am the Lord, I do not change”. God is not a man who can change. What God has said, have been accomplished, he will do for His promises never change. He is a just God and His love endures forever.

In Plans and Promises

God’s plans and promises also remain unchanging. In Isaiah 14:24, God declares, “The Lord of hosts has sworn: As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand”. God’s plans and purposes are not subject to human interference or change. Similarly, God’s promises, as recorded in the Bible, are dependable and unchanging. God’s plans are eternal and sin cannot thwart His plans. We change, but God’s promises never changes. The apostle Paul reminds us that in Christ, all of God’s promises are ‘Yes’. There is nothing in His creation that surprises God.

In Judgement

God’s judgement also remains unchanging. He is always just and fair in his judgement. He does not show favoritism or change his mind about what is right and wrong. In James 1:17 it says “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” God is a just God and He has given the authority to Jesus Christ to Judge all things. Those who do now acknowledge God will not escape His judgement.

In Love

And God’s love is also unchanging. As Romans 8:38-39 says “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” God’s love for his people is unchanging and steadfast, not subject to any outside influence or change. God’s love is everlasting and we experience this love in Jesus Christ. Through the Scriptures we understand that nothing can separate us from the Love of Jesus Christ.

Summary

In summary, the Word of God teaches that God is unchanging in his essence, attributes, plans, promises, judgement, and love. This is a source of hope and stability for followers of Jesus Christ, as it means that they can rely on God’s dependability and consistency, even in an ever-changing world.
